Meta's AI Terms Are Paused. The AI Edits Aren't.

Meta has paused the rollout of its new commercial terms, and the UK Competition and Markets Authority has opened an investigation into them. Neither one turns off a single AI feature in your ad account. With Black Friday on November 27, that gap is where the risk sits.
As reported, Meta had planned to start the updated terms on October 30, then moved the date to November 20 after talks with the CMA. On October 30, the CMA opened an investigation into whether Meta abuses a dominant position by imposing unfair terms on publishers and advertisers. The concern is a clause that could let Meta collect business website content to build its own products, including AI features.
Meta has paused the rollout while it consults industry groups, and its existing terms stay in place for now. It has said it would delay the November 20 date further if consultation runs past it. It also told Reuters there are "no grounds" for the investigation. The CMA's case page gives an indicative timetable of October 2026 to January 2027 for early information gathering, and no finding has been made.
The new terms would add an "AI Features" section that makes advertisers solely responsible for Meta's AI features and what they produce. According to The Keyword's reading, the earlier wording tied that responsibility to AI an advertiser chose to use, and the new clause drops that condition. It would also bar advertisers from removing AI watermarks or content-authenticating metadata. That text is on hold. The product behavior is not.
Meta also said on October 28 that tapping an ad can now open an in-app product browse by default instead of your website. Meta claims about 3% more conversions on average, based on its own test across roughly 117,700 advertisers. Those are Meta's figures, not an independent result. If your tracking assumes the click lands on your site, this changes what you see.
For most advertisers, no. Meta says its ranking upgrades lifted clicks 8.3% and conversions 15.7% on Facebook in Q2, again by its own measure, and Q4 is the wrong time to leave a channel that works. The point is control. Decide which AI features you will stand behind, and switch off the rest, especially anywhere wording matters: pricing, offers, regulated claims and brand-sensitive creative.
Not yet. Meta paused the rollout and its existing terms remain in place. November 20 is the date it has given, but Meta has said it may slip if consultation runs long.
No. The investigation concerns the terms, and no finding has been made. Features such as Advantage+ creative keep running unless you turn them off.
Under the proposed wording, as reported, the responsibility is no longer tied to choosing the feature. Have whoever handles your contracts read the final text. This is not legal advice.
